sweet praise

Psalms and Hymns

Psalmody is the ABC for beginners, progress for the more advanced, confirmation for the perfect, the voice of the Church. It makes festivals radiant; it creates mourning that is in accordance with God, for psalmody draws tears even from a heart of stone.

Blessings as we usher in the Nativity Season

Praise the Lord, for a psalm is a good thing;

Let praise be sweet to our God.

The Lord is building Jerusalem,

And He shall gather together the dispersion of Israel;

He heals the brokenhearted

And He binds up all their wounds.

He numbers the multitude of stars

And calls them all by name.

Great is our Lord, and great is His strength;

His understanding exceeds every measure.

The Lord raises up the gentle,

But humbles sinners to the ground.

Begin with thanksgiving to the Lord;

Sing to our God with the harp,

To Him who covers heaven with clouds,

Who prepares rain for the earth,

Who makes grass grow on the mountains

And the green growth for the service of men,

To Him who gives the cattle their food

And who gives food to the nestlings of ravens

When they call upon Him.

He shall not take pleasure in the strength of a horse,

Nor be pleased with the legs of a man;

The Lord is pleased with those who fear Him,

And with those who hope in His mercy.

Psalm 146

bloom where you are planted

blossom forth

Like everything that is beautiful, the flower gives pleasure  by being seen, and we should Glorify the Creator by looking at and enjoying it’s beauty.

Saint Clement of Alexandria

Those planted in the house of the Lord Shall blossom forth in the courts of our God;  They shall still be increased in a rich old age, And shall be prospering  So as to proclaim, “The Lord my God is upright, And there is no wrongdoing in Him.”

Psalm 91:14-16

thanksgiving and majesty

Great are the works of the Lord, Sought out in all things with regard to His will;  Thanksgiving and majesty are His work, And His righteousness continues unto ages of ages.

Psalm 110 : 2-3

Bless the Lord all you birds of heaven,

And sing a hymn to Him

and exalt Him

beyond measure unto the ages

lamp to my feet

candles before God

Your word is a lamp to my feet

And a light to my paths.

(Psalm 118:105)

“Like candles, so our souls must stand upright before God.

The narrow way, my brothers, leads to the Kingdom of God.   Only in restraint of mind, heart and will can the candles of virtue be lit, the flames of which rise up before God.   We must, under the image of burning candles,  understand the Christian virtues.”
